Friday, May 16, 2014 … Newsletter from Albany, New York

Hi Folks,

Cape May New Jersey Coming Into View

Cape May New Jersey Coming Into View

I do apologize, it has been so long since my last newsletter, and I do not know where to start. So much has happened. It seems that Hurricane Sandy, which occurred 18 months ago, caused a lot of damage to marinas, and many haven’t got WiFi up and running.

I left Norfolk on April 30th and crossed the bay to Hampton. The Loopers’ rendezvous was going to be near where I was staying, and since I wasn’t going to attend this spring event, I decided to leave. Hampton was delightful.

I made my way up the Chesapeake, and very quickly realized that one could spend the entire summer cruising this area. There is so much to see.

I anchored most of the way. I picked one anchorage called: Magothy River, which was a secluded bay, private and picturesque. There were two other boats there when I arrived, and I thought, “this is so wonderful!!” During the next hour, 25 sailboats arrived from an Annapolis sailing club to have an overnight party. All good things do eventually come to an end.

Wendy's Brother, Eric, at Delaware City

Wendy’s Brother, Eric, at Delaware City

Wendy’s brother, Eric, arrived in Baltimore, by overnight bus. The closest I could get to his arrival, was Middle River, and he met me there. We set out through the C/D Canal, which links the Chesapeake and Delaware bays. We visited Chesapeake City which offered free docking, and Delaware City which were really pushing their Crab Cakes.

Our trip down the Delaware Bay to Cape May, took 6.5 hours in light 3-foot seas.

The entire Jersey coast up to Manasquan, is do-able on the inside ICW, however, quite shallow, and you have to stay in the middle of the channel. We did run hard aground at one point, and it was a good thing Eric was driving, so I had someone to blame. We grounded with a half-tide rising, and so we had a pleasant 2 hours of reading and relaxing, waiting for the tide to float us off.

The following day was very foggy; however, we carried on. Thank you, Mr. Chartplotter, my new best friend.

Passing Statue of Liberty

Passing Statue of Liberty

OK, folks, I am going to tell you my story as to how events unfolded as we entered New York Harbour. I will remember this day, as long as I live.

Eric and I made the little off shore cruise from Manasquan, around Sandy Hook, and into Great Kills Harbour, where we met Dave Kuehner. He is an old university chum.

It was Tuesday, May 13th when we three set out for New York and the Hudson River. As we crossed under the Verinsano Bridge—which links Staten Island to Brooklyn—we are now in New York Harbour. Up ahead, we could see the grand lady herself, The Statue of Liberty. I started to cross some traffic lanes, to get close to the statue to get some good pictures.

The Statue of Liberty has always been one of my “must do’s” on this trip. I see this big ferry coming at me, and so I altered course to parallel its track. Eric and Dave yelled that I have a big ferry coming up on my stern. I tell you folks, these ferries move very quickly. I was in a sandwich situation and could only hold course and go through between them.

I look out my side window, and here is the Coast Guard coming up on our gunnel, with lights flashing and this kid’s about 18 years old, with wrap-around sunglasses standing at a deck-mounted machine gun, pulling us over. Now Dave and Eric said that this young officer was so young that he had Zits, but I didn’t see them because I was too busy avoiding the ferries and being pulled over. I figured I was really in a jamb with a big fine coming. The ferries passed, and the young officer explained about the 100-yard rule, (no boat is allowed closer than 100 yards to a ferry), and let us go.

West Point Military Academy

West Point Military Academy

Wow!!! Folks, that was close, however, the best is yet to come. We managed to get close the Statue of Liberty, as well as Ellis Island. Ellis Island is where all incoming immigrants had to go, to be processed before being allowed onto the mainland.

That being photographed we started past Manhattan, with its magnificent skyline, and up the Hudson River. Incidentally, the monument building for 9/11 is really spectacular.

There had been many “security” messages to be alert for floating debris in the Hudson River, after the spring flood. As we looked ahead, we could see what looked to be a big floating log. As we got close, we realized it was a body. It looked like this middle-aged man had been in the water for a few days, and so, I wasn’t about to haul him out and start CPR. I will always remember his black running shoes.

Sing Sing Penitentiary

Sing Sing Penitentiary

As the captain of Bluenoser, I had to make a decision. Will I alert Coast Guard? We had just been stopped by them and the kid with the machine gun. We had also just past the area where there were numerous small ferries and sight-seeing boats. The body was floating face down and directly towards them. I decided, since I am a foreigner, traveling on a Cruising Permit, it would be best if a U.S. citizen found the body and reported it. It was going to happen very soon, anyway.

For right or for wrong, that is what I did. If he was alive, I would do my very best to save him.

We continued up the Hudson River past West Point Army Academy, and famous Sing Sing prison.

The Hudson River is so very beautiful, as you pass through the Catskills.

The tide runs all the way up to Albany, and it is so strange to be going up river and picking up 2 knots of tidal current.

Eric has left us now, catching a train from Albany to Syracuse, where Cathy, his wife, will pick him up.

Leaving New York

Leaving New York

Tomorrow, Dave and I will continue up to Troy, which is the start of the Erie Canal. Oldest son Michael, who lives in Glenn’s Falls, will pick us up, and we will spend a day with him, Chantal, and three grandkids—Taylor, Everett and Caelan. Can hardly wait.

Well folks, my dream trip is rapidly coming to an end.

Leaving Troy on Sunday, we have 4 days to Oswago, (on Lake Ontario), 1 day to Trenton, and 6 days home.

My original day to arrive home was always May 31, and that is easily do-able.

Oh, what a fantastic trip, it has been. Some day, I will tell you all about it!!!!

So, until my next newsletter, I want everyone to be healthy and happy ,aaaannnnnnnnnnnddddddd!!!!!
